Calling All Grandparents!!!
Are you planning a Summer Grandparents Camp for the kids? Are you looking for fun ways to entertain your grandchildren this summer? If you are like me, I take all three of my grandsons for a week, while my grown children enjoy a vacation without kids. Last year we built Fairy Gardens. This encouraged the kids to use their imaginations and creativity, while getting them outdoors!!! We hiked through the woods looking for Gnomes and Fairies, built hand-painted bird houses, and then sat quietly in the forest waiting for the fairies to sneak out from under the cool moss along the river. The boys still talk about “Bamma Camp,” their nickname for me!
This summer, “Bamma Camp” is Let’s Go Rock Hunting!
I cannot tell you how much I look forward to this every year, and no year more than this year. I am so excited because now we can all enjoy a free “Mining Experience” at the Four Peaks Mining Co Store. If you have exhausted all the zoos, aquariums, water parks, and museums, this is the ideal, imaginative way to create a fun experience that children of all ages will enjoy.
We will set up a tent in the backyard to sleep in, set up camp tables to eat at and cook on the open grill! Campfire food is super easy and always includes the best part – Banana Boats and S’mores! Plus, some rock themed goodies like chocolate rocks and jelly bean rocks that are delicious!
Our first stop will be Four Peaks Mining Co. to give them their first ever mining experience. They will tour the Four Peaks Mini Mine. Built to look like the Amethyst Mine up in the Four Peaks Wilderness, there are 30 different minerals embedded in the walls of the mine that the boys will search for and identify. This includes 3 different rock hunts, which give information for kids to take home to learn more about the minerals they find. The naturally florescent mineral section of the mine will blow them away and get them revved up to search for rocks on their own at home. The kids will get to wear Mining Helmets with lights to look for examples of the minerals that you can buy and take home to use at night in your own camp. These mining helmets will help them find their way to the Mess Hall and the Latrine!
The store also has little rock collecting vests and glow-in-the-dark tee shirts with purple baseball hats to choose from, for mini miners to wear. The vest even has a compass so they can find their way on the trails outside. There are plenty of books for sale for readers of all ages to learn “How to be a rock Collector”, “Gem Trails of Arizona”, “Rock Guides of Arizona” and a few pocket guides. There is a super cool vintage Map that shows all the” Gold and Gem Mines from Then and Now”.
Kids can pick out a bag of polished rocks for $5.99 or buy a rock tumbler to polish all the rocks they find on their own! No trip would ever be complete without breaking open a real Geode for only $5.99! Pick a geode and use a real Miner’s tool to break it open to discover the white crystals inside.
All in a day’s fun and an educational way to start the Mining Experience and set the tone for a Grandparents camp that will be talked about forever! You will be the Heroes!
Ready, Set, Go…and Let the Rock Hunt Begin!
